A page to centralize links and resources, intended to people willing to train their English listening capability.
Maybe, we could think about setting up a virtual space to chat in English via Skype for example, to train the speaking part as well.
I'll join !

EDIT 20170323: Updated this page with all messages up to this date
EDIT 20170710: Added some common idioms
EDIT 20170711: Added some more common idioms + tried to make the video part easier to read

Speaking resources

Websites to exchange your native language for another language:

I strongly encourage anybody to speak as soon as possible. Most people on exchange websites try and speak with their limited knowledge.
It is hard but it works.

Listening resources

English videos, with French subtitles

  • Most of the TV shows of the French TNT can be seen in VOSTFR (refer to your TV/TNT tuner manual to change it via the remote)

English videos, with or without English subtitles

If you have the choice, prefer closed captioning (CC) beyond subtitles (because non verbal behaviors, background sounds etc. will be explained in italics usually, such as 'line ringing', 'actor groaning').
Legend:
- VD = Vocabulary density (low if the show uses and repeats the same set of words, high if the vocabulary is complex and/or non repetitive)
- CD = Comprehension difficulty (low if speed and/or actor articulating allows listeners to catch words easily)
- PE = My overall and personal difficulty estimate (knowing my written English is very different from my listening one, and that I can barely understand something by phone or watching TV)
- [N/D/Y] = content available in Netflix, Dailymotion, Youtube

List of TV shows/series/documentaries:

  • [D] Ross Kemp: Extreme World (full English, with some rare moments with English subtitles) | VD: Medium| CD: Low to Hard (various accents)| PE: Low (because even when comprehension is hard, Ross Kemp usually reformulates and explains content right after)
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4oa9vc : Papua New Guinea
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x56mpxu : Australian accent, but I cannot get the difference with UK for now
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x546tf2 : South Africa
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4yb5ok : Kenya
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4o0otj : Indian accents with rounded 'r'
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3qf25l : very hard accent from Glasgow, d'oh !
  • [N] Between (with audio description audio channel + CC) | VD: Low | CD: Low | PE: Low (basically teenager vocabulary + audio description which helps a lot)
  • [N] Gilmore Girls (with CC) | VD: Low | CD: Low | PE: Low (I find actors are articulating very well)
  • [N] Friends (with CC) | VD: Low (girls, boys, dating) | CD: Medium | PE: Medium (I can catch around 30/50% of the words, but Chandler's actor is articulating very well)
  • [N] House Of Cards (with CC) | VD: High (politics) | CD: High | PE: Very very very hard (I cannot understand Kevin Spacey)

List of places to get some English content:

  • (from 8€/month) Some shows and most of documentaries can be seen in VO + English closed captioning on Netflix.
Some other shows are available with audio description (probably for blindness disability primarily but I find it very very useful to get used to common English since there is an off-voice describing background, emotions on face, body movements etc. and these descriptions usually occur right before the matching actions happen in the scene)
Here is a page with an up-to-date list of TV shows with audio description (as for 11/2016)
  • (free) Some videos with English subtitles, filtered by categories tolearnenglish.com
  • (free) Some YouTube videos have closed captioning (see https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/100078?hl=en to activate them). Here is a list collected here and there

  • (seems free when ad-block is disabled) CBSNews website (setting close-captioning in the bottom-right corner). Example
  • (free) Search for videos with music + lyrics embedded, using '<artist> <songName> lyrics' in google (example)
  • (free) http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/
  • (free) Use TED talks but it can be quite technical

English radio channels / podcasts / mp3 / audio books

  • (free) Audio-Lingua provides mp3 files in several languages
  • (free) Learning English use a limited vocabulary and are read at a slower pace than VOA's other English broadcasts. Previously known as Special English Learning English Broadcast

Listening to songs with English lyrics to find the song names

When you are interested by a song with English lyrics, try to concentrate (very intensively as for me) and to catch some words from the song (with the final will to discover the name of the song maybe).
Then, do a query on a search engine starting with the word "lyrics", and queue the single words or the groups of words between quotes (").
For example, I have picked up the words "blood", "back", "hold", "my eyes" and built the query lyrics blood back hold brain "my eyes" which led me to the song 'Black Sabbath - Walpurgis'.
You'll be surprised how these words will become rooted in your mind, when you find a song thanks to this method.

Have you got any UK/US show to recommend for D- English listener?
To let you estimate my English listening level, I can barely understand 'Friends' while I read it's said to be very easy...

OK, seems I found my starting TV show for my current listening level.

It is called 'Between' (on Netflix), the conversation pace is usually quite low and there is an audio description available which is very useful to me.

When activated via the remote + English subtitles, it makes the understanding quite easier, since there is a male monotone off-voice which explains the context of each scene to come (but these explanations are not with subtitles, and only the main character dialogs are subtitled).

I have added a link with a list of TV shows with audio description in the first message.

For a scientific learning approach (as gifted people, you are very likely to appreciate) :

http://my.vocabularysize.com/select/test

Based on the fact that you are supposed to understand 95% of any English corpus with 3000 words, and 98% with 8000/9000 words (or words families). You can also find lists of most common / used words if you want to focus your learning in this more efficient way.

I have added some more idioms today, and a new TV show because it is very simple to understand to me.
However, please use with caution since content may be extremely hard to see. More information about the show here:

I have added a method in the first message to find out a song name from some English lyrics, picked up here and there in a song.
If you like listening to music, I find it a very good approach to root words very deeply in your mind.

Discovery of the day, somehow related to idioms: "slangs" keyword to find everyday English words and expressions (may be hard to guess when you don't know them otherwise)
https://takelessons.com/blog/american-english-slang-words

Example
You bet – Certainly; you’re welcome.
“Thanks for the jacket, Tom!”
“You bet, Sally!”

Hi, here are two tools that I use:

_AI Dungeon.io
_Wordreference

AI Dungeon is a text role playing game where you read and type what happens in the story. If you want to learn many turns of phrase, just make a tag for AIDungeon, and another for Wordreference, and like that, you have just to switch the tag to have a definition with context, syntax, etc... with Wordreference.

Hope you'll like them !

PS: Just check if the SafeForWork Mode is activated... cause the NonSFW mode can be pretty gore or/and raunchy...

Hey!

So, after three months of regular English practice (per work day: 30min speaking + 1h reading and listening to English content), I can now say I can handle any "normal" conversation without hesitating, without struggling with my words. It is so good to have reached that level!

To achieve that, I would really recommend this free website, to find someone to speak with: https://www.conversationexchange.com/
It's win-win (you speak English, they speak French or whatever languages you speak) and it worked pretty well with me (may be difficult to find a partner tough, be patient).

Definitely, it made my brain to be able to speak since I never learnt that at school.
Now that I got through the different steps, I would say there are 3 distinct and quite disjoint capacities to acquire to be comfortable using a new language:

  1. Reading/writing, which improves written vocabulary density
  2. Understanding, which allows you to get what others say
  3. Speaking, which improves real life vocabulary density + pronunciation. I am not sure it did improve my own vocabulary density very much, but once you get a new word, it is deeply anchored in your brain without apparent effort.

At school, I would say I only worked the first one out.
Honestly, it was very hard at the beginning, and I was not sure how to distribute our time, but we ended up doing 30min/30min in each language.

If you are interested by learning English, give it a try!
On the web site, I would recommend searching for:

  1. Brits (beware of Scottish/Irish guys etc. since they may have a strong accent which could be difficult to handle at first): timezone +1
  2. Scandinavian guys (Swedes/Norwegians/Finns): same timezone and seriously they all speak a very good or perfect English (quite neutral)
  3. Pakistan guys: timezone +3/+4 and they are very very nice and English is one of their official languages!

Last thing, sometimes, it is tricky to deal with the timezone and summer/winter hours, so I used this site to be sure

See you
